Christmas Office Party Themes

Corporate comedian Larry Weaver outlines a very inexpensive and memorable Christmas office party theme in his newly updated book "Funny Employee Awards: Your Complete Guide to Organizing a Humorous, Entertaining, and Rewarding Recognition Ceremony." Weaver recommends an office “Awards Show” theme to maximize impact with a limited budget.

Employee awards ceremonies are nothing new, but Weaver has added a humorous twist with funny award certificates designed especially for the office.

Sure, you could gather everyone together and hand out plaques reading “Best Salesman” or “Most Valuable Worker,” but where’s the fun in that? “Your employees don’t want to sit through a dry presentation any more than you want to give one,” advises Weaver.

Weaver's book gives tips on how to organize a corporate event to show gratitude and motivate staff. He suggests many low-cost touches to make your awards show special:
  • Set up a red carpet outside the meeting space (check your local remnant store for deals).
  • Station a photographer to pose as paparazzi as guests arrive.
  • Serve “mocktails” to make the evening festive.
  • Have a professional comedian or someone funny serve as the emcee for the event.
  • Hand out funny certificates to the winners.
"Very few company awards shows make employees feel special.  But a little creativity in your awards shows your staff that you really put some thought into it this year," Weaver said.

Weaver has employee award categories for teamwork, leadership, appreciation, achievement and excellence. Most of the awards "poke light fun." He encourages companies to only give those awards to employees with a sense of humor. For more sensitive types, the book contains a selection of "job well done" awards that range from congratulatory to silly.

"Funny Employee Awards" by comedian Larry Weaver contains everything you need to know about organizing a humorous employee recognition ceremony. And most important, you’ll get 101 printable certificates and templates that are appropriate for everyone around the office, no matter the type of business.

Employee Christmas Party Ideas

Hopefully you found this article on employee Christmas party ideas because you want to have the best holiday office party ever, and not because your Christmas party is in three hours and you have nothing planned. Either way, here are some last-minute ideas to liven up the festivities:

White Elephant Gift Exchange
Some call it White Elephant. Some call it Dirty Santa. Some call it "You know, that office party game where you try and steal each other's gifts." Just proceed with caution. Dirty Santa always starts fun, but never ends that way. In the beginning people are laughing and having fun. Then an hour later you’ve got two best friends who won’t speak for a month over a 9-pack of Starbucks flavored coffee. Hey, it’s a $10 gift. It’s not worth going to jail over. Imagine sitting in you cell, “What are you in for? "Well... I really wanted that Sham Wow.”

Holiday Party Entertainment
Maybe I'm biased, but live comedy is one of my favorite employee Christmas party ideas. Just make sure to hire an act that's both clean and experienced in front of diverse crowds. That means no curse words and no squirm-inducing jokes about what Tiger Woods does in his free time. As the person responsible for planning entertainment for your corporate event, there is no reason good enough to risk having a performer that might offend your group.

Employee Awards Show
The employee holiday party is the perfect time to give those who toil there a “thank you” that’s bigger than just free cups of warm sparkling  cider in the conference room. And that’s where the Employee Awards Ceremony comes in. Just make sure it's fun. Sure, you could gather everyone together in some conference room and hand out plaques reading “Best Salesman” or “MVW” (Most Valuable Worker), but where’s the fun in that? Funny awards give thanks while simultaneously making sure everyone has a good time. Your employees don’t want to sit through a dry presentation any more than you want to give one.

Here are some other ideas to try at your own risk:
  • Cancel catering and have a pot luck dinner. It allows employees to show off their culinary skills, and it allows you to have your own personal episode of Fear Factor. Is that hair in Bob's casserole human or animal? You just don't know!
  • Raffle off a job at a better company.
  • Really mismanage the whole thing and the government will bail you out.

Office Christmas Party Disasters to Avoid

Office Christmas Party season is upon us and that means it's time to be on your best behavior. Remember: Santa is watching. And by Santa I mean your boss. And by watching I mean posting the video of you dancing on the buffet table on the Internet.

But don't despair. It's time for my annual roundup of office party tips from around the World...

How to survive the office Christmas party
Take it from the African Business Review (yes, that's right - The African Business Review), "there is a fine line between having a good time and making a complete fool of yourself." Their advice? Avoid alcohol and "behave appropriately." That means no "informing your employees that sexual attention may assist career progression." Seriously, it says that.

No hug ruling must be embraced by employers
I'm not making this up. Things have gotten so bad in Australia that the Sydney Morning Herald warns "a few hugs between co-workers in the office or at the work Christmas party could leave you open to a sexual harassment claim." Hope those folks never attend an office party in Africa. And if you do find yourself facing a lawsuit, remember: "a ''huggy'' workplace is no defence."

What happens at the office party stays with you for a long, long time
The Winnipeg Free Press offers a much more tasteful array of advice. They encourage you to "practice the art of moderation" and "make a graceful exit". And remember to hold your monocle in your left hand while you sip your Earl Grey tea lest your "shenanigans" be flashed across the "worldwide net."

So to sum up... don't have any fun at the office party. Wear clothing that covers most all of your visible skin (a burka or hazmat suit will suffice) and don't drink anything. No touching and no smiling. Try not to blink, lest your involuntary eye movement be mistaken for flirting.

Or better yet, use some common sense and enjoy yourself.

If you really need to be told by a newspaper article not to encourage your employees to sleep with you, you're probably not management material anyway.

Funny Office Awards - 101 Funny Award Ideas for Employees, Volunteers or Staff

Looking for low-cost office party ideas? Comedian Larry Weaver has expert advice, funny office awards and printable certificates in his newly updated book "Funny Employee Awards: Your Complete Guide to Organizing a Humorous, Entertaining, and Rewarding Recognition Ceremony."

DURHAM, NC, USA - Company Christmas parties are coming and businesses are looking for office party ideas to fit their budget. Comedian Larry Weaver reveals how to plan a fun and entertaining corporate event in the Third Edition of his book "Funny Employee Awards: Your Complete Guide to Organizing a Humorous, Entertaining, and Rewarding Recognition Ceremony."

"Giving out funny office awards can be part entertainment, part morale booster at your holiday party. It gives employees a chance to get to know each other better, and it keeps the mood light. My book is full of gag awards and fun ideas for businesses to make the most of their holiday party," says Weaver.

Funny certificates can bring laughter long after the company office party ends. Just don’t take your inspiration from The Dundies that Michael Scott handed out on NBC's The Office. His selection ranged from boring (Pam won the "Whitest Sneakers Award") to the inappropriate (Kevin took home the "Don't Go in There After Me Award").

For work settings, Weaver recommends creating funny awards for employees that focus on humorous situations common to the workplace. Avoid references to personal appearance or character traits that could potentially embarrass the recipient.

Anyone who's tried to create their own funny awards knows that coming up with ideas is the toughest part. Weaver enlisted an A-list team of professional comedians and comedy writers to help, including an Emmy-nominated writer from Saturday Night Live and an editor from the New York Post. With their ideas anyone can put on a successful awards ceremony.

A few example funny award ideas include:
  • Bermuda Triangle Award - for the desk where things go in but never come out
  •  Running with the Bulls Award - for the biggest risk taker
  • Room Service Award - for showing up sometime before lunch
  • Houdini Award - for being able to escape from any bind
  • Loch Ness Award - for least likely to be found
Most of the awards "poke light fun." Weaver encourages companies to only give those awards to employees with a sense of humor. For more sensitive types, the book contains a selection of "job well done" awards that range from congratulatory to silly.

The awards reference pop culture, world history, classic literature, children's characters, and more. There are humorous awards for teamwork, leadership, appreciation, achievement and excellence.

Weaver's book gives tips on how to organize a corporate event to show gratitude and motivate employees. There are 101 professionally designed and funny award certificates that can be printed, framed, and presented plus 6 awards template for creating your own employee awards.

Pastor Appreciation Ideas

Pastor Appreciation Day 2010 was October 10. If you missed it, don't worry - you can appreciate your pastor year-round. Just be sure you mark your calendar now for Pastor Appreciation Day 2011 (also known as National Clergy Appreciation Day 2011), coming up on October 11, 2011.

According to Hallmark.com, Clergy Appreciation National Day of Honoring is always the second Sunday in October. The celebration was established in 1992 with a mission is to uplift and encourage pastors, missionaries and religious workers. Furthermore, all of October is National Clergy Appreciation Month, or Pastor Appreciation Month - whatever you prefer to call it.

Favorite pastor appreciation verses or scriptures include...
1 Thessalonians 5:12-13
"Now, brothers and sisters, we ask you to appreciate those who work hard among you, who lead you in the Lord and teach you.  Respect them with a very special love because of the work they do."
  (NCV)

"And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves." (King James Version)

Popular ideas for pastor appreciation include gifts such as poems, cards, skits, letters, plaques, or speeches. Many churches will hold a special sermon or program. Some congregations looking for a little pastor appreciation humor will hand out printable awards like these funny certificates.

Pastor Appreciation

No matter what you do, follow the Apostle Paul's advice and "esteem them very highly in love". And not just on Pastor Appreciation Day - but year-round.

Most Likely To Awards

Most Likely to Awards are a great way to add laughter to any yearbook, school function, family reunion, or office party. These awards typically take the format of "most likely to...", but you can also twist them into "least likely to..."

Once a mainstay in high school yearbooks, a classic list of Most Likely to Awards includes:
  • most likely to succeed
  • most likely to get married
  • most likely to become President
  • most likely to end up in jail
  • most likely to become a supermodel
  • most likely to be remembered
  • most likely to be forgotten

Flip the wording around and now you have doubled your list of awards:
  • least likely to succeed
  • least likely to get married
  • least likely to become President
  • least likely to end up in jail
  • least likely to become a supermodel
  • least likely to be remembered
  • least likely to be forgotten

Most Likely To Awards can work great in the office or workplace, too. But due to the sensitive nature of the workplace (especially in the U.S.), you'll want to avoid references to appearance or character traits that could potentially embarrass the recipient. New jobs are hard to come by these days, and you don't want to get canned by HR (most likely to fire you for inappropriate most likely to awards).

For corporate settings, create most likely to awards that focus on humorous situations common to the workplace. Some examples include:
The hard part in coming up with most likely to awards is making them funny. After all, the idea is to create a few laughs, not awkward tension. That's why we've assembled a team of top comedians and office workers to do the work for you.

Holiday Party Entertainment

Corporate Holiday Party Entertainment Ideas

When shopping for holiday party entertainment, live comedy can be a real crowd pleaser! Just make sure to hire an act that's both clean and experienced in front of diverse crowds. That means no curse words and no squirm-inducing jokes about what Tiger Woods does in his free time. A comedian that is funny without vulgar language, racy commentary or sexual innuendo will be a hit in any environment and for any audience.

As the person responsible for planning entertainment for your corporate event, there is no reason good enough to risk having a performer that might offend your group.

The creator of Fun Awards, Larry Weaver, can help you hire comedians that are 100% clean and appropriate for corporate events. But don't take our word for it...

"Larry Weaver is a great comedian. The material used was a perfect fit for our office environment. The Funny Awards part of the performance went over with bang. The employees talked about it all afternoon. Many, many comments and thanks were given to the HR Department for providing such a great program. Great job." - Teresa J Bell, ACS Annual Appreciation and Awards Luncheon

"Larry Weaver provided an excellent program for our Teacher Appreciation Banquet. He brought the house down. He was so funny, and the way he worked the audience was just out of this world. I asked for clean and funny and he gave me both. He was AWESOME!" – Annette Sessoms, Johnson Primary School Appreciation Banquet

"Thanks again for you help making our manager's party a success. I really enjoyed working with you, and I've heard a lot of positive comments about the show. We look forward to working with you in the future." – Jerry Lee Pendleton, Wal-Mart Distribution Center 6070 Holiday Party

"Terrific performance! Would recommend Larry Weaver to any organization. Clean, appropriate, and funny. He had everyone laughing. We hope to have Larry entertain us again!‎" – Breen Smith, President, New Hope Natural Gas Holiday Party

"Larry Weaver was spot on with his show. He asked about our company beforehand and incorporated funny stories about our employees into his show. It was great to have those jokes written just for us. We especially enjoyed the funny employee awards. Larry is a true professional!" – Gabi Jacob, Corporate Network Services Holiday Party

Christmas Office Party - Planning Ahead Saves Big Money!

If you haven't already begun planning your office Christmas party, July is a great time to get started. There's still time to line up the venue, catering, and entertainment that you want. Best of all, planning ahead can save you big money.

In this tough economy, it's tempting just to cancel the Christmas office party altogether. But that's just being lazy. Let's explore some radical ideas that may save you some money in 2010:

Hold your office party during off-peak times. This is easily one of the biggest ways to save money on your event. My unscientific estimate concludes that nearly 95% of all companies will hold their office parties on either Saturday, December 4 or Saturday, December 11. I completely made that up, but you get the idea.
  • Hold your office party any day of the week besides Friday or Saturday. There are five other days of the week to choose from. Show some love to Sunday. How about giving Wednesday a shout out? Want to really give your employees a thrill? Hold your party on a Thursday night and close the office the following Friday. Now that's a Christmas gift!
  • Hold your office party any other month besides December. I've noticed more companies moving their events until after the holidays. January is a fantastic time to host your office party. The post-holiday doldrums have begun to set in, and people need a good jolt to get them fired up again for the new year. And believe me, venues, caterers and entertainers would love to have some extra business during January. You'll get a lot more options to chose from, less competition and possibly some significant cost savings.
  • Hold your office party any other time besides 7PM. Lunchtime parties are becoming more common. How about a party at Noon on Friday, then close for the rest of the day? That's something to get excited about! What about 2:00 PM or 4:00 PM?
God bless all of the overworked Administrative Assistants out there. We know your company has had its Christmas party at 7:00 PM on the first Saturday of the month every year since 1831. That's awesome. But how about considering another date and time this year? Just give it some thought.

At least take a few minutes to ask if there are any costs savings to holding the event another night of the week. You may be surprised at what you find!

Humor in the Workplace

The Daily Journal takes a thorough look at humor in the workplace in their article, "Main Street: Even in business, laughter is the best medicine." Co-authors Don Daake and Edward Piatt offer their own take on Academy of Management Perspective article by Eric J. Romero and Kevin W. Cruthirds. The latter wrote:

"Humor is more than just funny concepts; it represents a multifunctional management tool that can be used to achieve many objectives. ... Managers can use humor to reduce stress and enhance leadership, group cohesiveness, communication, creativity and organizational culture."

Daake and Piatt offer three benefits and three warnings on the use of humor in the workplace.

Benefits of Workplace Humor

  1. Humor has a way of building group cohesion, enhancing communication and increasing job satisfaction.
  2. Humor can enhance communication because it awakens positive emotions and helps listening, understanding and the acceptance of messages.
  3. Humor can reduce stress.

Cautions When Using Workplace Humor

  1. The use of inappropriate ethnic and sexist jokes, personal insults or humiliation is out.
  2. It is OK to use a little self-deprecating humor, but when overdone, it can be seen as self-defeating humor.
  3. Never use humor as way to dominate or humiliate another person.

Read the full article at daily-journal.com. Even though this is my introduction to Romero and Cruthirds work, I put all of these guidelines to use when writing my collection of Funny Workplace Awards. The awards are not meant to embarrass, only to entertain. And you won't have to worry about getting in trouble with the HR department because the awards are all in good fun. National Nurses Day

National Nurses Day, also known as simply Nurses Day or National RN Recognition Day, always occurs on May 6 in the United States. National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th, the birth date of Florence Nightingale, a pioneering nurse. For jettsetters, International Nurses Day is always on May 12.

To make matters slightly more confusing, National School Nurse Day is celebrated on the Wednesday during National Nurse Week. This year, National School Nurse Day 2010 falls on May 12, 2010. According to the National Association of School Nurses website, National School Nurse Day has been set aside to recognize school nurses since 1972.

Popular Google searches for the holiday include nurses day, nursing day, nurse appreciation week, nurses day gifts, and "when is nurses day". With all the variations, it's easy to understand the confusion.

Typical Nurses Day gift ideas include flowers, gift certificates, lunch or dinner, and gift baskets. If your nursing staff has a sense of humor, you can always bring a few laughs into your recognition ceremony with funny awards.

The entire week is known as Teacher Appreciation Week (May 2 - May 8, 2009). Outside the U.S., many other country celebrate Teacher Appreciation every October 5, World Teacher's Day.

According to the National Education Association (NEA) website, Congress declared March 7, 1980, as National Teacher Day - but for that one year only. Administrative Assistant Day

Administrative Assistant Day is actually a misnomer for Administrative Professionals Day, which is the holiday formerly known as Secretary's Day. No matter what you call it, the unofficial holiday occurs on the Wednesday of the last full week of April.

Administrative Assistant Day 2010 falls on Wednesday, April 21, 2010. If one day isn't enough time for you to celebrate, the entire week is known as Administrative Professionals Week (formerly known as Secretary's Week).

According to Wikipedia, the National Secretaries Association, now known as the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) created the unofficial holiday in 1952  to recognize the work of secretaries, administrative assistants, receptionists, and other administrative support professionals. You may also know them as "Executive Admins".

The International Association of Administrative Professionals has actually trademarked the term "Administrative Professionals Day", although people continue to call it whatever they want.

Despite the push for the name change, the top Google searches for this holiday are (in order) secretary's day, administrative professionals day, administrative assistant day, professional administrative day.

Typical gifts for Secretary's Day include gift certificates, lunch, and gift baskets. Some companies cater lunch because hey, somebody has to stay in answer the phones (sad, but true). Best of all, bosses clumsily attempt to plan their own office party.

If your ExecutiveAdminProfessional-etary has a sense of humor, you can always bring a few laughs into the office with these funny awards:

National Employee Appreciation Day

National Employee Appreciation Day occurs on the first Friday of the month of March. This year, it fell on Friday, March 5, 2010. But don't worry, the entire month of March is also Employee Spirit Month - so it's not too late!

We're all about fun here, but showing appreciation to your employees is serious business. Companies should try harder than ever to retain and reward their best employees.

If you need National Employee Appreciation Day ideas, gift certificates are a good place to start. Most any drug store or supermarket will sell a wide range of gift certificates in any price range. Even Amazon.com has gotten into the game with a huge variety of gift certificates to choose from.

Look for gift certificates with wide appeal. While Starbucks may not be everyone's cup of tea (or coffee), almost anyone can enjoy a popular restaurant or bookstore.

Here are some additional Employee Appreciation Day ideas:
And remember: show your employees that you care. And not just on National Employee Appreciation Day, but year-round.

Fun at Work Day

Fun at Work Day, also known as National Fun at Work Day, always occurs April 1 - at least according to some websites. Other sites claim the date is always January 28 in the United States. Still others claim that the event occurs in 2010 on January 30.

International Fun at Work Day is always on April 1 - unless the date falls on a weekend. According to playfair.com, Thursday April 1, 2010 is the Fourteenth Annual International Fun At Work Day.

It's not unusual for holidays to have different dates for National and International celebrations. For example, National Teacher Appreciation Day is May 4, 2010 in the United States, while most countries celebrate October 5, 2010 as World Teachers Day.

So when is Fun at Work Day 2010 in the United States - January 28, January 30, or April 1?
The truth is, we don't know. Feel free to chime in on the subject using the comments section.
