Humorous Office Awards

Humorous Office Awards
The most humorous office awards are the ones that are also funny to the recipient. Here are some ideas for your workplace awards:

Embarrassing Moments at Work
A great source of inspiration for funny awards comes from some of the most embarrassing moments at work.

Whether it was walking into the wrong bathroom, wearing two different shoes to the office, or getting locked in the copy room, these humorous stories become the stuff of office legend.

At one Christmas office party I hosted for a propane gas company, a worker's truck had broken down. He pulled off the road and left the truck in the first available parking space. Turns out he left the truck right in front of... you guessed it - a strip club!

His boss took pictures of the worker's truck in front of a strip club and they're still laughing about it nearly a year later. That story and picture will live on in office folklore forever.

What humorous situations have happened at your workplace?

Funny Quotes
Another great source of humorous office awards are funny quotes. The funniest quotes are typically misquotes. Perhaps your President hilariously mixed up the company slogan during a big motivational speech. Instant classic!

What was the funniest quote or misquote at your organization over the past year?

Overused Phrases
Overused phrases are rampant in the workplace. They range from archaic industry jargon, to indecipherable acronyms, to "clever" phrases cooked up by management to motivate employees.

A former boss of mine used a NASCAR-inspired quote in a big rallying speech - "Keep turning left." You can imagine the fun we had with that phrase.

What overused phrase do your co-workers make fun of?

Use these ideas to create your own humorous office awards and please share your ideas in the comments section!

Funny Employee Recognition Awards

Funny Employee Recognition Awards
Fact: Employees love recognition. Most prefer positive recognition, but sometimes any recognition is a good thing.

The above photo is from a recent employee recognition program I hosted. I'm handing out the classic "TGIFriday's Award for most excited about the weekend". This recognition always gets a good response because every workplace has (at least) one person who can't wait to punch out on Friday.

This is also a great example of a funny employee recognition award that doesn't embarrass or overly poke fun at the recipient.

My awards are all about having fun without making fun.

Need more funny employee recognition awards? I've got dozens of them. You'll find them all here:
Funny Employee Awards
"As far as more recognition goes, I am happy with the amount of love and respect I have received from other artists and the public. Of course, I would love more, and think I deserve it." - Suzi Quatro

Funny Work Awards

Funny Work Awards
FunAwards.com is well known for its collection of "Funny Office Awards". A few years ago, someone asked me if my "Funny Employee Awards" would work for companies not in an office environment. We don't want to leave out nurses, firefighters, restaurant staff, and all of the blue-collar folks out there working outside of an office environment.

The short answer is, yes - Funny Employee Awards does have a large selection of funny work awards for non-office personnel.

But truthfully, I did have office workers in mind when I wrote the first collection of awards a few years back. Since then, I have released "Funny Teacher Awards" and more recently "Funny Award Certificates".

I wrote Funny Awards Certificates as a more informal version of Funny Employee Awards. In an office environment or employee awards setting, managers and bosses must be mindful when poking fun. In a warehouse or blue-collar setting, coworkers might be more apt to let loose and really have fun with their fellow workers.

Funny Employee Awards purposely avoids potentially embarrassing personality traits or appearances. Funny Awards Certificates pushes the envelope a little further for workers who are more tight-knit and not afraid to have a little fun.

If you had to choose which funny work awards are best for you, here are my guidelines:

Or buy them both and you'll have funny work awards for everyone!

Christmas Office Party Games

See this set on Flickr: Funny Office Awards

I got this nice review from a user in Australia this week:
"While surfing the internet to find some good certificates for my staff the only one which we really enjoyed was this site. Both myself and my assistant found them to be humorous. I would recommend this site to anyone." - Nellie H. Tullamarine, VIC, Australia
Thanks Nellie! There's a reason that FunAwards.com is the best and only place you should turn to for office awards and Christmas office party games -- I'm a professional comedian.

And I'm not just a professional comedian who sits behind a keyboard guessing what office workers and staff will find funny -- I'm out on the road year-round performing at office parties. I know what makes office workers laugh.

Take a look at the pictures above. Those people are having fun!

December is my busy season. Between office Christmas parties and end-of-the-year holiday celebrations, I'll be spending much of the month flying all over performing live at office parties. This experience allows me to come up with the best and most humorous office awards for your staff.

If I'm not coming to your office party this year, don't worry. I've made it easy for you to have your own fun office awards event. Just download the certificates, print, and share. It's easy!

Funny Certificates to Give

My new book Funny Awards Certificates: 101 Humorous Awards to Give Family, Friends, and Coworkers (1st Edition) is now on sale!

This collection is a little different from past award collections. I originally wrote "Funny Employee Awards" to give managers and bosses a way to have fun with employees, volunteers or staff without offending or getting into trouble with Human Resources.

"Funny Award Certificates" is a more peer-to-peer product. As the title states, I designed these awards for you to give to family, friends, coworkers - and even teammates.

Check out my new YouTube video for a peek inside the book:

New to this edition is the ability to edit both the Award Title and the Award Description. If this functionality proves popular, I will incorporate it into future versions of "Funny Employee Awards". Be sure to let me know your thoughts in the comments section.

And here's a press release that went out today announcing the new book:
"Does the thought of holiday parties evoke images of awkward conversations around the family dinner table or never-ending White Elephant gift swaps? Comedian Larry Weaver feels your pain."
Funny Award Certificates – 101 Funny Awards to Give Friends, Family and Coworkers

I hope this book will help you liven up your family reunions, alumni gatherings, neighborhood parties, and office events!

Boss's Day - Bosses Day Gift Ideas

When is Boss's Day?
Boss's Day (also known as Bosses Day or National Boss Day) always occurs on October 16. This year, it falls on Sunday, October 16, 2011. Since it falls on a weekend in 2011, most will observe National Boss's Day on Monday, October 17, 2011.

Bosses Day Gift Ideas
According to Wikipedia, Emily Post says you should not give a gift to your boss unless it is from a group of employees. Nobody likes a suck up.Well, except maybe the boss.

Serious gift ideas for Boss's Day include cards, flowers, lunch, gift certificates, or balloons. Or go in with your coworkers to get a gift from the entire office.

Fun Ideas for National Boss Day
Humor is a great way to show appreciation while having fun at the expense of your boss. Just make sure they actually have a sense of humor first.

Funny Leadership Award
Celebrate your fearless leader with this free bosses certificate.

And if you don't have a boss, you can celebrate Bruce Springsteen... or Boss Hogg... or the Big Bossman (may he rest in peace)... or Rick Ross.

Just don't forget National Boss's Day 2011. In this economy, you should be thankful to have your boss!

Certificate Folder, Holder, Jacket

A certificate folder, also known as a certificate jacket or certificate holder, is a low-cost way to really dress up your funny awards presentation. Made of paper, they come in various colors and prices. The one pictured below is a blue certificate folder with embossed gold trim:
Certificate Folder
The brand most widely available is Southworth, who makes both jackets (folders) and holders. At least for Southworth, the difference is:

  • certificate folder = certificate jacket and has a front and back flap (like a file folder),
  • certificate holder typically only has a backing (mounted like a picture frame).
I prefer the certificate folder, and you can purchase a cheap certificate folder at you local office supply store or Amazon.com for close to one dollar each. They typically come in packs of either 5 or 10. Just go to Amazon.com and search for "Southworth certificate jackets".
Certificate Holders
The certificate jacket makes the award look great even if your color printer isn't the best or you don't have good quality paper for your certificate.

If you're looking for something even more impressive, check out these certificate frames.

Weiner Award - Create your own funny Weiner Certificate

I feel as though we need to apologize for the Weiner Award in advance. We try to stay classy here at FunAwards.com, but really... how can we pass up offering you a free Weiner award?

Again, all apologies to Rep. Weiner. But I must implore everyone to stop taking photos of yourself and sending them over the Internet. They're going to eventually end up... well, on the Internet. If you're using a Droid, at least turn of the "Send Twitter messages by text" feature. It's easy to mess up. Not that I would know.

Submit Your Caption
Anyway, back to Weiner. I chose not to put an explanation for the award on the certificate. I mean, I could have went with "Weiner Award for most likely to send junk emails" but I really want to hear your ideas.

So post your ideas in the comments section. Just remember: keep it classy!

Funny Awards Show on YouTube

I just posted a new video for my Funny Awards Show on YouTube. Here's the transcript:

Hi, I'm comedian Larry Weaver. If you're looking for something truly unique for your next meeting or event, have me host your own Awards Show gala. But this won’t be your typical Awards Show, we’ll be handing out my exclusive line of Fun Awards!

Just like the Oscars or the Emmys, we'll kick off your event with a hilarious opening comedy routine.

After the opening comedy monologue, I’ll start handing out the awards. And we've got tons of great awards to choose from. Recognize that member who is always running late, can never be found, or just can't stop going on about their pet.

Most of the awards poke light fun but we've got plenty of "job well done" awards to choose from, as well. The important thing to remember is to pre-select the biggest “characters” from your group for a really unforgettable event.

This show is perfect for office parties, teacher banquets, volunteers, church staff -- any event that could use a highly-interactive and hilarious presentation.

So don’t settle for another boring meeting. Give your group something to talk about all year long with my Fun Awards!

Teacher Appreciation Day

Teacher Appreciation Day occurs on Tuesday of the first full week of May in the United States. Also known as National Teacher Day, Teacher Appreciation Day is on Tuesday, May 3, 2011.

The entire week is known as Teacher Appreciation Week (May 2 - May 6, 2011). Outside the U.S., many other country celebrate Teacher Appreciation every October 5, World Teacher's Day.

Popular Google searches for the holiday include teacher appreciation ideas, teacher appreciation gifts, teacher appreciation certificates, teacher appreciation event, teacher appreciation party, teacher appreciation banquet, and other similar searches.

According to the National Education Association (NEA) website, Congress declared March 7, 1980, as National Teacher Day - but for that one year only. NEA continued to unofficially celebrate the day every March, until the NEA Representative Assembly voted to change the event to Tuesday of the first full week of May beginning in 1985.

Typical Teacher Appreciation Day gift ideas include gift certificates, lunch, and gift baskets. Here are some unique ideas for Teacher Appreciation Day 2011:

National Volunteer Week

Volunteer Recognition Day, commonly referred to as Volunteer Appreciation Day, always occurs on April 20 (according to Holiday Insights). Volunteer Recognition Day falls on Wednesday, April 20, 2011.

If one day isn't enough time for you to celebrate, the entire week is known as Volunteer Recognition Week and the entire month of April is Volunteer Recognition Month.

Well, maybe...

According to the Hands on Network website, National Volunteer Week 2011 will take place April 10 - 16, 2011, "in order to avoid conflicts with religious holidays."

Well, at least we can all agree that April is officially Volunteer Appreciation Month... I mean Volunteer Recognition Month.

The point is to recognize and appreciate your volunteers. Ideally you would do this year-round. But at least do it once sometime in or around the month of April. Typical gifts for Volunteer recognition include gift certificates, lunch, and gift baskets.

Funny Volunteer Awards
This year, throw your volunteers their own Awards Show gala. You can do it on the cheap, and it's a good way to recognize and have fun at the same time. Ignore the term "employee" and find volunteer awards in 101 Funny Awards by comedian Larry Weaver. It will give you all the tools you need to throw a fun recognition ceremony for your staff.

Administrative Assistant Day

Administrative Assistant Day is actually a misnomer for Administrative Professionals Day, which is the holiday formerly known as Secretary's Day. No matter what you call it, the unofficial holiday occurs on the Wednesday of the last full week of April.

Administrative Assistant Day falls on Wednesday, April 27, 2011. If one day isn't enough time for you to celebrate, the entire week is known as Administrative Professionals Week (formerly known as Secretary's Week).

According to Wikipedia, the National Secretaries Association, now known as the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) created the unofficial holiday in 1952  to recognize the work of secretaries, administrative assistants, receptionists, and other administrative support professionals. You may also know them as "Executive Admins".

The International Association of Administrative Professionals has actually trademarked the term "Administrative Professionals Day", although people continue to call it whatever they want. Despite the push for the name change, the top Google searches for this holiday are (in order) secretary's day, administrative professionals day, administrative assistant day, professional administrative day.

Typical gifts for Secretary's Day include gift certificates, lunch, and gift baskets. Some companies cater lunch because hey, somebody has to stay in answer the phones (sad, but true). Best of all, bosses clumsily attempt to plan their own office party.

Fun Awards for Staff

If your ExecutiveAdminProfessional-etary has a sense of humor, you can always bring a few laughs into your workplace with our exclusive line of funny awards. Celebrate Administrative Assistant Day 2011 with 101 Funny Employee Awards. National Employee Appreciation Day

Do you ever find yourself asking "When is Employee Appreciation Day?"

National Employee Appreciation Day occurs annually on the first Friday of the month of March. This year, it falls on Friday, March 4, 2011. If you miss it, don't worry, the entire month of March is also Employee Spirit Month!

According to the website recognition.org...
Employee Appreciation Day first arrived on calendars in 1995.  A Recognition Professionals International’s founding Board member, together with his publishing company, Workman Publishing, created Employee Appreciation Day as a way of focusing the attention of all employers, in all industries on employee recognition.

We're all about fun here at FunAwards.com, but showing appreciation to your employees is serious business. Companies should try harder than ever to retain and reward their best employees.

If you need National Employee Appreciation Day ideas, gift certificates are a good place to start. Most any drug store or supermarket will sell a wide range of gift certificates in any price range. Look for gift certificates with wide appeal. While Starbucks may not be everyone's cup of tea (or coffee), almost anyone can enjoy a popular restaurant or bookstore.

Here are some additional Employee Appreciation Day ideas:
And remember: show your employees that you care. And not just on National Employee Appreciation Day, but year-round.

Most Embarrassing Moments at Work

A great source of inspiration for funny awards comes from embarrassing moments at work. Whether it was an email sent to the wrong recipient, a resume left on the printer, or a quick snooze during an all-hands meeting, these stories become the stuff of office legend.

Embarrassing moments at work are fair game for year-end award ideas - so long as the recipient is in on the joke and has a good sense of humor. There's no humor in needlessly embarrassing someone further. But if the event triggered a new office catch phrase, or the recipient themselves joke about it, by all means use this inspiration for your funny awards ideas.

A recent OfficeTeam Survey Reveals Managers' Most Embarrassing Moments at Work. Some of the more familiar situations included:

  • Getting locked in the office,
  • Going into the ladies' bathroom by mistake,
  • Answering the phone using the wrong company name,
  • Sending a job offer to the wrong candidate,
  • Wearing bathroom slippers to work while in a rush.
Robert Hosking, executive director of OfficeTeam, encourages you not to fret. "Using humor can help you recover from uncomfortable situations. Occasionally showing a little vulnerability on the job also can make you appear more accessible and approachable to colleagues."

We all goof up from time to time. Just laugh along and roll with the fun. Who knows... come year-end you just may find yourself getting a funny award!

Fun at Work Day

Fun at Work Day, also known as National Fun at Work Day, always occurs April 1 -- at least according to some websites. Other sites claim the date occurs in 2011 on January 29. Even other sites state that January 29, 2011 is not "Fun at Work Day" but instead "Have-Fun-at-Work Day". If you look around enough, you'll find websites listing the 2011 as occurring on January 25, 28, 29, 30, and 31.

International Fun at Work Day is always on April 1 -- unless the date falls on a weekend. According to playfair.com, Friday, April 1, 2011 is the Fifteenth Annual International Fun At Work Day.

So when is Fun at Work Day 2011 in the United States -- some random date in January or April 1? The truth is, we don't know. Feel free to chime in on the subject using the comments section. And remember, every day can be Fun at Work Day with Funny Employee Awards!
